Fish & Facts
Eliminating the guess work out of rubber worm fishing off of a kayak!
The rubber worm is perhaps one of the most successfull and widely used
artificial baits across the country.
Kayak Anglers will stock a huge array of colors, sizes, shapes, and lenghts. I'm no
exception, but which worm is the best? Well that depends on which one will
catch the most fish.
So where do you start? with so many to choose from? It's simple...Just keep it
simple. Pick a neutral color worm for most northeast lake applications.
Neutral colors like Junebug, Motor oil, and Watermellon. Pick a straight tail
worm for more finesse type fishing and a curly tail for when fish are a little
more active.
If your fishing a very pressured area then down size. Go from 6"worm to a 4"
worm, Change from a curly tail worm or one with lots of action to a simple do
nothing straight worm.
Always try to use as little of a weight as possible, if the worm is weighted do
not add additional weight. As long as you can see your line and it's sinking you
have the right weight/worm combination.
Anglers can't feel the bait because it's light, so they immediately want to start
moving it in order to feel the bait or adding more weight to get the feel.
Again, leave the worm alone and let it do what it was design to do.
A rubber worm signifies many different baits to a largemouth bass, and the
mistake most anglers make is that they do not allow the worm to do it's job.
Again it's simple...cast it over there and leave it alone. Most anglers
immediately try to impart more action into the worm by moving it, adding more
weight, or never letting it sink to the bottom. etc etc.
So, it's simple. start with a 6" straight or curly tail worm in a neutral color,
with little to no weight added. Rig the worm Texas style, pinpoint your cast to
the desired target area, cast and let the worm do it's thing.
Watch your line for any shuttle movements, if after several seconds nothing,
slowly pick up your line and feel for resistance, if you feel some resistance
set the hook and hold on, if not reel back and re cast to a new target area.
Practice this on your favorite lake and watch the results. Develop confidence in
your technique and style and you will catch more fish...guaranteed.

Choosing a fishing kayak? So I'm often ask....what do you think is the right kayak for me?
This is a loaded question and definitely not a one word answer.
First off, there are many variables to consider before choosing your kayak.
Ask yourself:
- Where will this kayak be used 80-100% of the time? Be honest with yourself. Small lakes, ponds, rivers or Oceans. While you might have great expectations to fish the south shore off Honolulu, be realistic.
- How much time will you spend fishing from this kayak.1 hour maybe 2 or do you plan on staying out for 6 or 8 hours of fishing.
- Fresh or Saltwater fishing, each are different and require different style kayaks.
- Your height and weight. While you might only be looking for a small boat to use on you private lake or small pond. Remember that most have weight capacity limits. So if your 6'3" and weight 225lb
forget about that cute little red 9.5 or 10' you see on display. You will be over it's weight capacity before you even sit in it.
- What type of fishing will you be doing? and what type of fish are you targeting. Do you want to fly fish spin fish or just dunk worms.
Remember you are selecting a tool to do a job, and while all kayaks may look the same they are not all create equal. Talk to your local paddle shop they will assist and help you in selecting the right kayak.
They will make sure you get into the correct boat and avoid costly mistakes
