Kayak Paddle Angle

|
A low angle
paddling style is the most common style of paddling. The paddles tend
to be longer and blades narrower and longer than high angle paddles. A
low angle stroke is generally a semi-circular, or low-sweeping stroke.
Low angle paddling is more about maintaining consistent hull speed of
the kayak. The narrower blade allows for longer paddling trips with
less reactivity, hence, less fatigue.
A high angle
paddling style is one that mires at vertical blade entry and exit from
the water. It generates maximum forward thrust due to the straight line
path that the blade follows through the water adjacent to the boat. A
high angle paddle will have a shorter length and a wider blade than a
low angle paddle. Because of this, high angle paddling utilizes a
faster cadence and is used in surf paddling, fitness paddling, sprint
paddling and conditions that warrant quick responsiveness due to
changing water conditions.
